Alternatives to Renting a Moving Truck

If you have ever moved (and chances are that you have!), you’ve known the struggles and complications that can be involved in getting your stuff from Point A to Point B. Moving in-town can be difficult in and of itself, but moving across the state, to a different state or across the country can be an even bigger undertaking.

While I’ve been in Hoboken for well over a year now, the year I spent before moving here was spent in three different locations. In one calendar year, I moved three times. And these weren’t local moves. They were big, honkin’ cross-country moves.

If you’ve ever moved cross-country, you know how expensive things can become. Coming right out of grad school (and grad school wages), I was highly motivated to find the cheapest option available to me and this meant coming up with some creative ways to get my things from here to there. For each of my moves, I decided that a moving truck wasn’t for me, so I set out on a question to find formidable alternatives to renting a moving truck. After a lot of brainstorming and Internet searching, I found the following to be decent, potentially lower cost options (depending on your situation).

5 Reasons You Should Have a Life List, Bucket List, or Flux List

Life lists are all the rage these days. Or so it seems. If you visit other lifestyle blogs, it’s likely that you have seen some life lists floating around.

Obviously, I’ve always known what a bucket list, or life list, is, but it wasn’t until I found them on Sean Ogle’s Bucket List, Joel Runyon’s Impossible List and Steve Lamb’s Epic Quest blogs that I started to think that I should come up with my own.

The result of that was the Flux List. As each of the above examples do, I have a unique bend to my flux list. It’s a changing list. I may want to include one thing on it now, but I may change my mind later. It’s flexible and I want it to reflect at any given time what my priorities are and what I want to do with my life. However, the most important part of my flux list is that it motivates me to continually strive towards the life that I want to live: one where I make purposeful decisions, work with the constraints that life gives me, and make things happen.

Monthly Review: May 2013

Hey all! I’m a couple of days late with my monthly update, but we’re not too far into June, so let’s pretend it’s still the very end of May. Sneaky time, it’s going by far too quickly.

From the Internets: June 2nd

Happy Sunday! How are you all doing? This week has been killer in terms of the heat. Hopefully you’ve been able to stay cool. When I haven’t been standing in front of my AC, I’ve been going to see former coworkers bands play, hitting up the mall, working on redesigning my professional portfolio and keeping as cool as possible.

To help top off your weekend, I have some links for you:

Arrested Development Season 4; Or, How to Successfully Pull Off a Netflix Binge

This past weekend marked the release of the fourth (and much awaited) season of Arrested Development. To celebrate the release and to mark off an item on my 26 New Things list, I partook in a Netflix binge. While I didn’t watch all 15 episodes in one day, I did watch them over the course of two days. And, if it makes me sound any more badass, I only watched two episodes on the second day. So the effort was there to get it done in a day!

To help you get ready for your own Netflix binge of Arrested Development or for any other TV or movie binge, I’ve compiled some tips to make your binge a success. This wasn’t my first binge, so I’m no newbie to this Netflix bingeing thing. In fact, I’m well-known for my abilities to latch on to a show and watch it relentlessly for weeks. I mean, how else would I watch be able to watch Breaking Bad in three weeks? Not just one season in three weeks, either. All four and a half seasons. And they’re 1 hour-long episodes, too!

Seriously, blood, sweat and tears comfy clothes, a good Internet connect and fun times went into the making of this list, y’all.

Getting to and from New York City Airports

The Ultimate Guide to Getting To And From New York City Airports

Since moving to the New York City metro area, I have flown at least once each month as a result of going back and forth to Rochester (part of being in a long distance relationship) and my other travel endeavors, like my trip to San Diego and going to Las Vegas and Phoenix for conferences last fall. I tend to pick the cheapest flight option available to me, so I go with whatever airline and airport fits the bill. As a result of this, I’ve tried nearly all of the ways of getting to and from New York City airports.

To help you figure out what your options are, I’ve broken down your options for getting to and from New York City airports, including John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

My goal isn’t to tell you what the best way to get there is, but to give you a sense for your options. Your starting location, your ending location, the amount of time you have, and your budget all play into what the best option is for you.

26 New Things to Do While I’m 26

You all know I love goals. I love planning them each month, I love analyzing how I did (even though I sometimes have a bad record at actually meeting them), and I like achieving them.

Today is my 26th birthday, so it only seems fitting that as a birthday present to myself, I set a goal for my 26th year. Well, I don’t want to set goals for my year, per se. I already set goals for myself in 2013. I want to enhance my life by doing 26 new things while I’m 26.

Sarah from Yes and Yes gave me the idea and I liked the idea so much, I’m doing it for myself. Some things are big things, some things are tiny things, but all are new things to do (at least for me).

The Cost of Running

Running is often seen as an inexpensive alternative to having an expensive monthly gym membership. However, what many people tend to forget is that running isn’t just about buying a pair of shoes and venturing out into the great outdoors. In actuality, it’s a hobby that can vary greatly in terms of expenses.

Hello all! I’m writing to you from the future. Yes, that’s right. From the future.

Did you believe me? Hah! Well, I lied. I’m actually writing this post ahead of time, since I’m planning to head out to Ocean City, NJ this weekend to celebrate a friend who has graduated from vet school. While I’m out catching some rays and avoiding the freezing cold water, please enjoy these reads:
