How to Successfully Quit Your Job and Change Careers

It’s amazing how far a year can take us! I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, as I’ve been doing a lot of contemplating about how 2012 panned out and how I want to shape 2013 for myself. In the midst of all of that self-reflection, I recently surpassed the one year anniversary of me doing something that was incredibly huge for me on both a personal and professional level: I quit a job that was a terrible fit for me in a town that equally not right for me.

Want to know a dirty little secret? Quitting my job was probably one of the best decisions that I’ve made in my adult life. I’ve regretted my decision exactly zero times. In removing myself from that job, I was able to do a few very awesome things: I was able to move closer to my friends and family, I was able to switch into a career path that more closely aligned with my long term goals, and I was able to severely reduce the amount of stress in my daily life.

Want to know another dirty little secret? I didn’t have a full-time job lined up before I quit. However, I did secure myself a part-time freelance position in my new field and I was armed with the knowledge and confidence that this path would be better for me in the long-run.

My decision to leave my job was not one that was made hastily. It was made after months of thought and research and planning. I couldn’t have successfully pulled it off if I hadn’t done the following things.

From the Internets: January 4th

Thank goodness for short work weeks! After a fabulous week and a half off from work, I’m back and recharged… but no less welcoming of the weekend than before.

I’m really trying to turn over a new leaf with this whole blogging thing and so far, so good. I’m excited to press the reset button and start of the year with some awesome content about my favorite topics: life, career, money, and travel.

Here are some fun reads that have been floating around the Internets:

Reducing Debt in the New Year: The Debt Movement and the NO SPEND Challenge

Reducing debt is one of the good ol’ New Year’s resolution standbys. Everyone wants to lose weight, eat better, drink less, spend less, save more, yada, yada, yada. And in an age where student loan debt, credit card debt and car loan debt are well in the trillions, reducing debt is also on the top of American’s to-do lists once the new year hits.

It’s easy enough to decide what one’s resolution will be. However, as everyone knows, sticking to resolutions is a much more slippery slope. One of my goals for 2013 is to pay off a sizeable chunk of my student loans.

10 Goals for 2013

Yesterday, I focused on what did and did not go well in 2012. Overall, I have to say that it was a good year. Now, it’s time to look forward to 2013, and specifically goals for 2013. There are only a few more hours to pull out my dancing shoes and hit up the dance floor with my smooth (or not so smooth moves). I plan to dance and drink and eat the night away with my friends to ring in the new year… before I go into full party mode, I want to focus on the year ahead.

Last year, I came up with 12 personal goals for 2012. This year, I was debating coming up with 13 goals, but finding myself stuck at 10, I decided to keep it a bit more concise. Here is what I have in store for 2013 … in no particular order.

Yearly Review: What Did & Did Not Go Well in 2012

Hello all! As the number of minutes to 2013 quickly diminish, it’s time for me to take stock of where I’ve been and where I’m going in 2013 and conduct a yearly review. This post is mostly for me, but it’s also something that will have an effect on the goings on of Living in Flux.

I imagine this post will be a doozy, but it’s important stuff! First, I’ll talk about how 2012 went for me: what went well in life, career, money and travel. Then I’ll talk about what didn’t go as well for those areas. I’ll follow-up tomorrow (just in time for midnight) to highlight my goals for 2013.

Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays! I hope this holiday season finds you warm, cozy and food-filled. I know that’s how mine will be. I’ll be back later in the week, but wanted to wish everyone a very merry and happy day, no matter what you celebrate.

* Sigh * I know! I know! I know! I’ve totally been slacking on posting. I really don’t have a good excuse other than work has been crazy and there has just been very little time left for things other than sleeping and eating. That will change very soon, as I’m planning to not work throughout the holidays. Yep, I’m creating my own personal winter break. Just like it was when I was in college! Throughout and after my much-needed break, I plan to get back in the swing of posting.

To round out the end of the year (well, if we make it there – tomorrow is supposed to be the end of the world after all), I want to share my end of year review and goals for 2013. I’ve started to think through what my goals for 2013 will be, but I’m not quite there yet. I laid out 12 goals last year (pre-blog era) and I’m quite happy to say that I met or exceeded most of the ones that I continued to focus on (there were a few that I de-prioritized halfway through the year, because they were bad goals).

Anyways, while I go and figure my goals out, here are some fun things from the Internets to keep you busy:

San Diego Essentials

As you are well aware, Superstorm Sandy delayed my departure from San Diego. Knowing that we would be in California for a few extra days, we decided to rent a car and drive up to San Francisco. During the ride (I didn’t drive – lucky me!), I had a lot of time to soak in the scenery and contemplate what I thought of California and my stay there until that point.

The architecture in California is NOT what I was expecting

Maybe I haven’t been as observant when looking at pictures of buildings in California as I could have been, but I was pretty excited to find non-boring architecture in San Diego. Things are newer, yes, but it also has this cool vibe that you just don’t get on the East Coast.

Getting around was fairly easy to do by foot, airplane, etc.

The great thing about San Diego is that the airport is fairly close to the city. And by close, I mean, I was able to get a shot of a plane’s underbelly!

Since we stayed in downtown San Diego, it was easy to walk to the hot spots we wanted to check out. We walked about 7 miles the day we went to Balboa Park, we didn’t taxi while we were in town and we took a bus over to Coronado Island. We decided it might take too much time to swim over there, you see.

Driving up to San Francisco was a fairly easy ride as well. It took us nearly 8 hours, but it was 8 hours well worth it. We were able to see some of the California countryside while driving with the Pacific at our side.

A view of the Pacific Ocean from the 101

We saw nothing but blue skies on our way up to San Francisco from San Diego along the Pacific Coast.

California is beautiful

I already knew this. But now I’m finally able to say that I’ve seen it myself. I couldn’t help but be in awe as we drove up the 101 and had the Pacific Ocean right beside us. It was really cool to drive through so many different terrains in just one day. The East Coast is beautiful in its own way, but there is definitely not as much variety.

My verdict?

San Diego is awesome! I’d go again (and again) in a heartbeat. When I go next time, I hope to check out some of the things surrounding San Diego. We really only explored downtown because it was close and there was plenty to do, but there is so much more to do in the surrounding area – especially if you have a car.

Monthly Recap: November 2012

December is upon us and we are quickly marching toward the end of 2012. Pretty soon, it’s going to be time to start assessing how well I achieved my goals for 2012 and determining how I want 2013 to play out. That’s going to be a treat for this coming month, so in the meantime, I’ll recap November.

November 30th! The end of the month!

It’s crazy that there is only one more month left in 2012. It’s been quite a (good) year and a lot of fabulous and unexpected things have happened in my life. I’ll be doing my monthly review soon, but wanted to leave you with some sweet reads for your Friday evening (or Saturday morning).
