5 Professional Wardrobe Essentials for Women

If you work in a professional office environment, you may find that work clothes, or as fancy people say, your “professional wardrobe” constitutes a pretty big expense. You’ll likely feel the blow to your wallet whether you’ve been working for a while or you are just starting out. However, if you’re just coming out of undergrad or grad school, you probably feel the blow even more.  Even without the cost, you may not even be clear on where you should start or what you should buy first.

In the sea of options that are available, make sure you stock up on the essentials first. Here are five professional wardrobe essentials that you should acquire before anything else.

Backyard Tourism: Intrepid Museum

I’ve been in a bit of a travel dry-spell, so I’ve been spending my weekends exploring my own backyard. Living in the New York area gives me plenty of opportunities to check out cool spots and locales. Check out my other backyard tourism extravaganzas to Chelsea Market and Mets’ Citi Field.

Recently, I went to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum Complex. I hadn’t heard about it before, so was delighted to find out that there was an aircraft carrier museum sitting literally in my own backyard. The Intrepid Museum is located on Pier 86, right across the river from Hoboken.

Shuttle Ride through Water

Hello all! I hope you had a fabulous week. Mine started and ended with a lot of rain. On Monday, we had quite a bit of rain that caused some flooding on the streets surrounding my apartment. As a result, my daily shuttle ride to the PATH station was more like a boat ride than a shuttle ride. To finish off the week that started pretty wet, I got caught outside yesterday during torrential downpour.

Clearly, there was excitement all around! Hopefully your week wasn’t quite as wet.

To finish the week strong, here are some cool links:

Frugal Living in an Expensive City

Living in a city can be expensive. If you’re not careful, you can find yourself in some deep trouble. However, being proactive, living a mostly frugal lifestyle and counting your pennies can allow you to live it up in an expensive city without going broke.

My year in the New York area has taught me a lot about money, especially since I’ve been trying to stay afloat and pay off my student loans at the same time. Frugal living in an expensive city requires, in the words of Mad Eye Moody, “constant vigilance!”

In my year here, I’ve learned some lessons about frugal living in an expensive city. While I’ve talked about general strategies for frugal living before, here are some of my favorite strategies keeping it frugal in an expensive city.

Surviving and Thriving in a Long Distance Relationship

Yesterday marked a couple of things for me. First, it was my New York/New Jersey anniversary! Whether I believe it or not, I have been in the New York area for a full year. Yes, I live in Hoboken, but I work every day in the City. The bustling and wonderful City. However, yesterday also marked another important milestone in my life. Yesterday marked the one year anniversary of Richard and me being in a long distance relationship, or LDR for short.

To celebrate this pretty significant milestone, I thought I would share some of the ways that we’ve managed to survive and thrive in our long distance relationship. Hopefully, if you ever find yourself in a long distance relationship, you can take some pages out of our book and make the best of a not-so-ideal situation.

Backyard Tourism: Seeing a Baseball Game at the Mets’ Citi Field

I’ve been in a bit of a travel dry-spell, so I’ve been spending my weekends exploring my own backyard. Living in the New York area gives me plenty of opportunities to check out cool spots and locales. Check out my first backyard tourism extravaganza to Chelsea Market.

When Richard suggested we hit up a Mets game a couple of weekends ago, I was game (pun intended). While a little chilly, it was the perfect spring day to hit up a baseball game.

Photo Friday: Brussels, Belgium

Welcome to a new feature on Living in Flux: Photo Friday!

I’ve been lamenting at the fact that I haven’t been able to adequately satisfy my wanderlust as of late. For various reasons, I haven’t been able to get much travel in. To help quell my yearning to travel, I’ve been working on being a backyard tourist and I’ve been sorting through my travel photo archive. Each week, I plan to share a sweet snap from my travels pre-Living in Flux.

This photo is from my trip to Europe in June 2009. While exploring the streets of Brussels, Belgium, I found that there were many streets that has strings of flags strung across them. The colors and the tattered, weathered quality of the flags spoke to me, so I snapped this picture.
